PETER TREVELYAN
DIAGRAMMATIC, 29 JULY - 22 AUGUST 2015

Peter Trevelyan's work has been described as appearing:

{capable of making empiricism, cartography and even pure mathematics, sublime and transcendental experiences. }(Warren Feeney)

Mind-boggling and awe-inspiring are other descriptors frequently heard in relation to his gravity-defying three-dimensional 'drawings'.

In this new exhibition Diagrammatic, Peter continues his investigation of the role of the drawing or diagram in representing what may be seen in the world but expands his material or drawing tool, beyond his signature use of fine pencil lead, to include the plastic set square. His use of this material was first seen in his show Solo at The Dowse last summer where he employed it to create a large new freestanding sculptural installation.

In Diagrammatic, all works are wall mounted playing with an illusory depth of field to tease the boundary tensions between sculpture and drawing.

Peter Trevelyan has been exhibiting since 2000 and has built up an impressive exhibition history which has included several major temporary public art works. Recent public exhibitions include {Solo} (The Dowse 2014-15), {The Euclid Set} (Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 2014), {The Crystal Line} (Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 2014), and {Submission }(Engine Room Gallery, Massey University, Wellington, 2014). Peter graduated with a BFA from the Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury in 2000. He completed his MFA at Massey University's School of Fine Arts in 2008 and a PhD in 2014. His work is in public and private collections in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong.
