JUDY MILLAR
THE BRIDEGROOM'S VOICE, 20 APRIL - 14 MAY 2016

We are proud to present a new exhibition by the highly acclaimed Judy Millar. Bringing to mind Leonard Cohen's songline "there's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in", these paintings open new spaces and conversations.

Binary defying, they are abstract and otherworldly, ancient and contemporary, physical and conceptual.

The exhibition title The Bridegroom's Voice, a quote from the Gospel of St John, was found by Judy when reading the "The Confessions of St Augustine" over the summer. The chapter, where the quote appears, deals with concepts of time: beginnings, endings and eternity -- all recurring themes in Judy's work. The title also serves to suggest other broader meanings and narratives contained in the depths and gaps of her gestural surfaces. The famous bride of the great 20th century conceptualist Duchamp inevitably enters the scene and all the debates about the role of art and how operates are found fermenting in the picture plane.

One of New Zealand's most thoughtful and internationally successful artists, Judy is based in Berlin and Auckland. She has a huge global exhibition history with highlights including the 2009 and 2011 Venice Biennales.
